The GREYS Business Growth Starter Guide

A practical guide to building a stronger brand, improving your market presence and putting the right commercial foundations in place.

This guide is for founders and business owners who want steady, compounding growth rather than occasional bursts of activity. It sets out the five foundations we work on with clients at GREYS, in the order that makes each one easier, then gives you a 30-day checklist to put them into practice.

01

Why Foundations Beat Tactics

Most businesses do not have a marketing problem. They have a clarity problem that shows up as a marketing problem. When your positioning is vague, every campaign has to work twice as hard, every price conversation is harder, and every new channel feels like starting again.

The five areas that follow - brand clarity, digital presence, marketing strategy, commercial foundations and a working growth rhythm - reinforce one another. Work on them in order and each one makes the next easier.

  • Tactics borrowed from someone else's business rarely transfer. Foundations do.
  • Clarity lowers the cost of every decision that follows it.
  • Consistency beats intensity: a modest plan you follow outperforms a bold one you abandon.
02

Brand Clarity

Brand clarity is the ability to explain, in one sentence and without jargon, who you help, what changes for them, and why you are the credible choice.

Write it down before you design anything. A logo cannot rescue positioning, and a new website cannot rescue a confused message.

  • One sentence: who you serve, the outcome you create, and the reason to believe it.
  • Three proof points: results, credentials or client stories that back the promise.
  • Your price logic: what you charge, and the value that justifies it.
  • The words you will not use - vague claims any competitor could also make.
03

Digital Presence

Your digital presence is not a brochure. It is the place a warm prospect goes to confirm that you are real, credible and worth contacting.

Prioritise the pages that do commercial work: your home page, one clear services page, proof, and a way to get in touch. Everything else can wait.

  • A home page that answers three questions in ten seconds: what you do, who for, and what to do next.
  • One primary call to action, repeated - not five competing ones.
  • Proof kept current: testimonials, results, client names or short case summaries.
  • Contact details and a response promise on every page.
04

Marketing Strategy

A marketing strategy is a decision about where you will be consistently visible, and what you will say when you get there.

Choose two channels you can sustain for a quarter rather than five you will abandon in three weeks. Repetition builds recognition; constant novelty builds fatigue.

  • Two channels, one clear audience, one message per channel.
  • A content rhythm you can keep: a weekly post, a monthly insight, a quarterly campaign.
  • A reason to be remembered - a point of view, not a stream of product posts.
  • Simple numbers: how many conversations, enquiries and clients each channel produced.
05

Commercial Foundations

Growth exposes weak paperwork. The moment a larger client, a partner or an investor engages you, the quality of your contracts, terms and records becomes part of your credibility.

Put the basics in place before you need them: clear terms of business, a contract you understand, and a simple routine for tracking money in and out.

  • Terms of business: scope, payment terms, liability and what happens when things change.
  • A client contract and a proposal template you can adapt quickly.
  • An invoicing and payment routine with clear due dates and follow-up.
  • A one-page view of revenue, costs and cash so decisions are not guesses.
06

Your 30-Day Growth Checklist

Four weeks, one focus each week. Do not start the next week until the current one is finished.

  • Days 1-7, Clarity: write your one-sentence positioning, three proof points and price logic. Ask two people outside the business to read it back to you.
  • Days 8-14, Presence: tighten your home page, services page and contact route. Add or update three pieces of proof.
  • Days 15-21, Reach: choose two channels and publish on both twice. Note every conversation that follows.
  • Days 22-28, Commercial: review your terms, contract and invoicing routine. Fix the weakest link first.
  • Days 29-30, Review: list what produced enquiries, what did not, and what you will repeat next month.
